FAQ and Basic Information about Multi Day Camps

FAQ

Questions that are frequently asked about multi day camps

What age groups are eligible to attend multi day camps? 7 – 12 years old. The younger children should be mature enough to spend time away from parents.

SAFETY

At Camp A B Sea Taiwan, safety is our top priority. With an exceptional guide-to-adventurer ratio of 1:4, we ensure that every adventurer receives personalized attention and care. While we meticulously design activities within acceptable risk tolerances, it’s important to recognize that we venture into the great outdoors, where unexpected elements like insects, animals, and slippery rocks may pose challenges. It’s essential for parents and adventurers to understand and be comfortable with this reality.

Before attending camp, parents will be required to sign a waiver acknowledging these potential risks. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards reckless behavior to ensure the safety of all participants.

Central to our approach is teaching adventurers awareness of their surroundings. By imparting knowledge and fostering a keen sense of awareness, we empower adventurers to navigate potential hazards with caution and confidence. While accidents cannot be entirely eliminated, our staff, who are trained in lifesaving and first aid, are prepared to respond effectively to any situation that may arise.

At Camp A B Sea Taiwan, we prioritize the physical, emotional and psychological safety and well-being of our adventurers above all else, ensuring a memorable and secure outdoor experience for all.

What language will be used during the camp?

At Camp A B Sea Taiwan, English is the primary language of communication. However, we understand the importance of ensuring that all adventurers feel comfortable and understood. Therefore, there will always be a staff member nearby who is fluent in both English and Chinese to provide translation assistance as needed. This ensures that every adventurer can fully participate and engage in all activities, regardless of their language proficiency.

How can I stay informed about my child’s progress on multi day camps?

Staff will always be reachable and a few pictures will be posted on private communication channels.

What provisions are made for non-swimming adventurers (campers)?

At Camp A B Sea Taiwan, no swimming experience is required, as we operate under the assumption that participants may not know how to swim. To ensure safety during all water-related activities, we provide suitable buoyancy aids for every adventurer. This precaution helps to create a secure environment where adventurers can enjoy water activities with confidence and peace of mind.

How is homesickness addressed on multi day camps?

Dealing with homesickness at Camp A B Sea Taiwan is a natural part of the camp experience, especially for first-time adventurers. Here are some strategies to help adventurers overcome homesickness:

What You Can Do:

1. Preparation and Communication: Before camp begins, talk to your child about what to expect and reassure them that it’s normal to feel homesick. Encourage open communication and let them know they can always talk to PB or Teresa if they’re feeling homesick.

2. Familiar Comforts: Allow your child to bring a few familiar items from home, such as a favorite stuffed animal or blanket, to provide comfort and familiarity in a new environment.

3. Positive Thinking: Encourage your child to focus on the exciting activities and new friends they’ll make at camp rather than dwelling on feelings of homesickness. Help them create a list of fun things they’re looking forward to.

4. Build Resilience: Encourage your child to develop coping skills and resilience by facing challenges and overcoming obstacles independently. Remind them that feeling homesick is temporary and that they can learn and grow from the experience.

What We Will Do:

Camp A B Sea Taiwan staff will provide support through listening empathetically, validating their feelings, and expressing pride in their bravery for attending camp. We’ll reassure adventurers that missing home is normal and share personal experiences of overcoming homesickness.

Positive reinforcement will boost their confidence and help them feel more at ease in their new environment.

By implementing these strategies and offering your child support and encouragement before camp, you can help them overcome homesickness and fully enjoy their Camp A B Sea Taiwan experience.

Are visits and calls allowed during the multi day camp?

No. At Camp A B Sea Taiwan, we prioritize fostering self-reliance and self-confidence in our adventurers. While some parents may worry about their child feeling homesick, our experience shows that frequent communication with parents can sometimes prolong feelings of homesickness. Instead, we encourage parents to trust in the camp experience and give their child the opportunity to adjust independently.

Where is the campsite for the multi day camp situated?

What plans are in place for severe weather conditions like typhoons?

At Camp A B Sea Taiwan, the safety of our adventurers is paramount. In the event of severe weather conditions, we may need to cancel or postpone the camp to ensure the well-being of all participants. To make informed decisions, Camp A B Sea Taiwan relies on multiple weather forecasting sources to assess the suitability of weather conditions.

In instances of temporary severe weather, we are prepared to transition to indoor adventure activities temporarily, prioritizing the safety and comfort of our adventurers while maintaining the spirit of adventure.

What about allergies?

Staff at Camp A B Sea Taiwan are no strangers to food allergies. We take it seriously. Please ensure to inform our staff if your child has or you suspect they may have food allergies.

What meals are provided for adventurers (campers)?

Where do the adventurers (campers) sleep?

At Camp A B Sea Taiwan, we prioritize teaching fundamental skills that every adventurer should know. One such skill is learning to pitch a tent, an essential aspect of outdoor exploration. We provide tents and sleeping mats, ensuring that adventurers have the necessary equipment to practice and master this basic skill during their time with us. Adventurers will need to bring their own sleeping bags and pillows.

What if my child has to go to the toilet at night – who will take them?

At Camp A B Sea Taiwan, we implement a buddy system where adventurers wake up their tent-mates to accompany them to the bathroom. This ensures that adventurers have support and company during nighttime trips. Our staff members are always nearby while sleeping, ready to assist if any needs arise.

What should the adventurers bring with to the multi day camp?

Very little. Let’s keep things to the basics. A list will be sent out with every registration package.

Safety Policies for multi day camps

Please read carefully before registration

At Camp A B Sea Taiwan, safety is paramount. With an exceptional staff-to-adventurer ratio of 1:4, every adventurer receives personalized attention and care. While activities are designed within acceptable risk tolerances, the outdoor environment can pose unexpected challenges like insects, animals, and slippery rocks etc.

**Parents are required to sign a waiver acknowledging these risks, and the camp maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards reckless behavior.**

Central to the camp’s approach is teaching adventurers awareness of their surroundings, empowering them to navigate hazards with caution and confidence. Staff are trained in lifesaving and first aid to respond effectively to any situation.

Camp A B Sea Taiwan prioritizes the physical, emotional, and psychological safety and well-being of all adventurers, ensuring a memorable and secure outdoor experience.

Camper Preparation and Participation

At Camp A B Sea Taiwan, managing risk goes beyond the duties of instructors and support staff. The camp’s educational goal is to engage adventurers in the safety management process, emphasizing that physical and psychological safety are essential for learning. Preparation is crucial, and as challenges and adventures increase, adventurers are encouraged to be more aware, exercise discretion, and undergo training.

Participatory Risk Management Curriculum

At Camp A B Sea Taiwan, adventurers actively participate in the safety management system during the session. While no specific expertise is assumed and prior experience is not required, adventurers are expected to follow instructions, foster a positive learning environment for each other, and steadily develop new skills. Each session begins with a welcome from instructors, introducing key safety concepts and conducting a gear and equipment check to ensure that each adventurer is properly equipped. All new activities commence with a briefing that includes identifying hazards and providing safety instructions. As adventurers become more familiar with safety management, instructors progressively delegate more responsibility for risk assessment, mitigation, and decision-making to the group with instructor input and supervision.

Emergency Planning and Preparation

All Camp A B Sea Taiwan locations have emergency response plans. Although our focus is on anticipating and preventing risks, the nature of our programs requires us to be prepared to respond adaptively to a wide range of unexpected events.

Adventurer Supervision

Camp A B Sea Taiwan maintains a low staff-to-adventurer ratio of 1:4 and implements a buddy system, pairing adventurers who are responsible for always staying together. While there are times when adventurers are not directly supervised, such as during meals, showers, and sleep, their buddy should be nearby. These supervision policies foster self-reliance, as well-trained individuals are capable of making good decisions with or without direct instructor supervision.

Camp Communication

Teresa will always be available via cell phone for communication.

Emergency Support and Management

Each Camp A B Sea Taiwan camp carries basic first aid equipment. Staff are trained in First Aid, CPR, and the Heimlich maneuver, and they receive regular updates on treating minor injuries and assessing and stabilizing more serious issues for evacuation to a medical facility. Due to the remote settings of some of our camps, evacuation to a medical facility may take several hours, although Fire Stations could provide the nearest medical support in emergencies.

Reconnecting Children with Nature: A Review of "Last Child in the Woods" by Richard Louv

Explore Richard Louv’s insightful book “Last Child in the Woods,” which sheds light on the importance of reconnecting children with nature. Discover how Camp A B Sea Taiwan embodies these principles, offering transformative outdoor experiences that nurture a love for nature and environmental stewardship.

Reconnecting Children with Nature: A Review of “Last Child in the Woods” by Richard Louv.

In “Last Child in the Woods,” Richard Louv explores the disconnect between children and nature, highlighting the detrimental effects of what he terms “nature-deficit disorder.”

Louv argues that today’s children are increasingly disconnected from the natural world, leading to a host of physical, mental, and emotional problems. He proposes that reconnecting children with nature is crucial for their overall well-being and the health of the planet.

Louv begins by examining the various factors that have contributed to this disconnect, including urbanization, the rise of technology, and a culture of fear that keeps children indoors. He cites alarming statistics, such as the decline in outdoor play and the increase in childhood obesity and attention disorders, to illustrate the extent of the problem. Louv also discusses the negative impact on children’s creativity, cognitive development, and sense of wonder.

One of the key points Louv makes is the importance of unstructured, outdoor play in natural settings. He argues that children who spend time in nature are healthier, happier, and more creative. They develop a sense of empathy and stewardship for the environment, which is crucial for addressing environmental challenges. Louv emphasizes the need for parents, educators, and policymakers to prioritize nature experiences for children and incorporate them into daily life.

Camp A B Sea Taiwan embodies many of the principles advocated by Louv in “Last Child in the Woods.” By offering outdoor adventure camps in English, the camp provides children with the opportunity to connect with nature and learn valuable skills in a fun and engaging way. Through activities such as shelter building, fire safety, and wilderness exploration, campers develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world and gain confidence in their abilities.

Camp A B Sea Taiwan also promotes the importance of Leave No Trace principles, teaching adventurers how to enjoy the outdoors responsibly and sustainably. By instilling these values early on, the camp helps children develop a lifelong respect for nature and a commitment to environmental conservation.

In conclusion, “Last Child in the Woods” is a compelling call to action to reconnect children with nature for their well-being and the health of the planet. Camp A B Sea Taiwan is a shining example of how this can be achieved, providing children with meaningful outdoor experiences that foster a love for nature and a sense of responsibility toward the environment.

Louv’s book and Camp A B Sea Taiwan serve as powerful reminders of the importance of nature in children’s lives and the need to prioritize outdoor experiences in today’s technology-driven world.

Reconnect your child with nature and join Camp A B Sea Taiwan for an unforgettable adventure that fosters a lifelong love for the environment!
